A Brief History
In the spring of 1917, Mr. Mark Matthew Vest, an ordained Presbyterian elder, began making plans for the establishment of a Cumberland Presbyterian Church in Alcoa. Mr. Vest was given permission to hold worship services at a vacant log cabin and wrote a letter to Rev. D. S. Robinson, the moderator of the 44th General Assembly to organize the church. The church was named Robinson Chapel Presbyterian Church in honor of the organizing minister, Rev. D. S. Robinson. In 1919, Rev. Alexander L. White became the first pastor of Robinson Chapel. Numerous pastors and officers have served the congregation at Robinson Chapel and Alcoa community over the one hundred plus years that it has been open.
