Chapter 4 Verses 1-11
In verses one through eleven, the writer of Hebrews wrote about a rest that would be the reward of those that believe in God. There were children of Israel that heard about the Promised Land. They didn’t enter it, because their lack of faith in God led them to be disobedient to God. The writer of Hebrews encouraged the readers of this letter to make every effort to enter the rest God has promised. Chapter 4 Verses 12-13 The word of God is living and active. The writer of Hebrews wrote that the thoughts and attitudes of the heart will be judged by the word of God. The writer of Hebrews also wrote that nothing is hidden from God’s sight. He sees all that is going on and everyone will give an account to him. Chapter 4 Verses 14-16 The writer of Hebrews wrote again that Jesus is our high priest and that we can approach his throne with confidence. We can be confident Jesus understands what we are going through. We can be confident we will receive the mercy and grace we need. How do you feel about God seeing all we do? Do you go to Jesus as our high priest and do you go to him confidently?

Chapter 3 Verses 1-6
The writer of Hebrews encouraged those that first read this letter and us to fix our thoughts on Jesus, who is our high priest. The writer compares Moses and Jesus. Moses was a servant in God’s house, while Jesus is the son over God’s house. The writer in verse six stated that those that hold on to their courage and hope are God’s house. Several New Testament scriptures compliment verse six and state that believers are God’s house. For example: John 14:20-23; John 17:20-21; Ephesians 2:11-22; 1 Corinthians 3:7-17. Chapter 3 Verses 7-19 In these verses, the writer of Hebrews gave a warning about unbelief. The writer quoted Psalm 95:7-11 in verses seven through eleven. These verses reminded the readers of Hebrews that God punished the Israelites for their unbelief in the wilderness. God was faithful in delivering them from Egypt. The unfaithfulness in the wilderness caused them to be denied entrance into God’s rest. Today is the day to encourage each other to believe in God’s faithfulness. Today is the day to remember God’s faithfulness and the reward he promised for those that don’t turn away from him. The kingdom Jesus is preparing for us is better than the Promised Land the Israelites received from God. Only those that believe in God and his son Jesus will enter that kingdom. Only those that believe in God and his son Jesus will enter God’s rest in that kingdom. Have you been living day to day like God lives with you? Do you desire to have a closer relationship with God? How deep is your faith in God today? How strong is your faith in God today? Who or what encourages you to remain faithful to God and Jesus? Chapter 2 Verses 1-4
The writer of Hebrews gave a clear warning in these first four verses. The writer wanted those that read this letter to remember what they had heard from Jesus. The writer started out chapter one talking about receiving the word of God from his son. Now in chapter two, the writer warned that there will be punishment for those that don’t heed the word of God spoken by his son. Chapter 2 Verses 5-18 In these verses, the writer of Hebrews stated that it was God’s plan that Jesus be part of the human family. Jesus died so that everyone didn’t have to die for their sins. That is God’s grace. Jesus has glory and honor because of his sacrifice. In verses fourteen and fifteen, we see that Jesus took power away from the devil. We no longer have to fear death, thanks to Jesus. The devil can’t hold death over our heads to get us to do things against God’s will, thanks to Jesus. It is up to us to freely choose to accept what Jesus did and then live a life according to what he said. The writer in verse seventeen stated a fact that some people will not accept today. Jesus is mankind’s high priest. Let me repeat that. Jesus is mankind’s high priest. No man or woman has that position. Anyone claiming to be a high priest to God the Father, the God of Abraham is a liar. Only Jesus did what mankind needed and couldn’t do. Jesus is the only one that can turn aside God’s wrath and take away mankind’s sins. The choice to accept Jesus and the sacrifice he made on the cross is up to every individual. Jesus will not force a person to accept him. Verse eighteen hopefully encourages us during the times we are facing today. Jesus can help us, because he suffered and was tempted. Which men and women in positions do we look up to today? Which men and women in positions today do we have high expectations for? Do we turn to Jesus to be our high priest? Do we talk with Jesus daily about temptations we are facing? Chapter 1 Verses 1-14
The writer of Hebrews starts out this letter telling how Jesus is superior to angels. In verse three, the writer tells what Jesus is to God and what he did. In verses five through fourteen, the writer used Old Testament scripture to support the fact that Jesus is superior to angels. Verse five has quotes from Psalm 2:7, 2 Samuel 7:14, and 1 Chronicles 17:13. Verse six has a quote from Deuteronomy 32:43. Verse seven has a quote from Psalm 104:4. Verse nine has a quote from Psalm 45:6,7. Verse twelve has a quote from Psalm 102:25-27. Verse thirteen has a quote from Psalm 110:1. The writer ends the first chapter by stating one responsibility angels have. They are sent to minister to God’s children, the ones that will inherit salvation. Jesus is the one that made a way for people to become a child of God and receive salvation. How often do we think of angels and supernatural things? Is there someone or a group of beings that we value more than Jesus? Do we trust God’s word about who Jesus is? |
