Matthew 27:11-26; John 19:1-3 Today we will continue our study on the Apostles’ Creed. The section of the creed we will look at today, that our scripture affirms, is “suffered under Pontius Pilate.” According to Britannica.com, Pontius Pilate was the governor or Roman prefect of Judaea from 26-36 CE. Pilate listened to the charges the chief priests and elders brought against Jesus. Later he went with the crowd’s decision to release Barabbas instead of Jesus, even though he knew the chief priests and elders handed Jesus over to him for their own gain. Pilate chose to keep his custom going of letting the crowd decide which prisoner to release during the festival. Both Matthew and John clearly state that Pilate had Jesus flogged by Roman soldiers before sending him to be crucified. Sometimes we are in a position to make a just or righteous decision. Pilate was in a position to do just that, but instead chose to send Jesus to be crucified after following what the chief priests, elders, and the crowd wanted. Has someone ever lied about a person to you? How did you respond? How do you make decisions? Have you ever made a decision based on what was popular with a certain group of people or a crowd? What was the result of your decision? The Editors of Encyclopedia Britannica. “Pontius Pilate.” Britannica.britannica.com/biography/Pontius-Pilate. Accessed 25 Jan. 2023. John 3:16; Luke 1:26-35 Today we will continue our study on the Apostles’ Creed. The section of the creed we will look at today, that our scripture affirms, is “and in Jesus Christ His only Son our Lord; who was conceived by the Holy Ghost, born of the Virgin Mary.” Our scripture for today in John states that God gave his one and only Son so whoever believes in him will not perish, but have eternal life. According to Luke, before Jesus was born, God sent the angel Gabriel to tell Mary about Jesus and how he would be conceived. In Luke chapter two we can read about the birth of Jesus in Bethlehem. We affirm God is faithful to what he says he is going to do. God chose Mary to be the mother of Jesus and God chooses us to do things for him today. When God tells us ahead of time he is going to do something through us, believe him. How would you explain the virgin birth to someone? How does Jesus being born as a human help you relate to him? How does Jesus being the Son of God help us? Please read the following for next week: Matthew 27:11-26; John 19:1-3 Pastor Chris Genesis 1 and Isaiah 40 Today we will begin a study on the Apostles’ Creed. It is something we say at each Sunday morning worship service. Over the next few weeks we will take a section of the Apostles’ Creed and look at scripture that affirms what we are saying when we say the creed. According to Britannica.com, the creed started out as statements of faith a person would say before receiving baptism in the Catholic church. The final form was established in southwestern France in the late 6th or early 7th century. The section of the creed we will look at today, that our scripture affirms, is “I believe in God the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth.” At the start of Genesis chapter one we read God created the heavens and the earth. All that is was created by him. Chapter one tells how God creates order on the different days during creation. In chapter forty of Isaiah, God told the prophet Isaiah to comfort the people. God specifically wanted the people to remember he is the creator of the heavens and the earth. They suffered for a time, but God was going to take care of them. We may also suffer for a time, but God is still able to take care of us. Since he created the heavens and the earth, he can definitely take care of us. How many other scriptures do you know that affirm God created the heavens and the earth? How often do you use scripture to back up your faith? How easy is it for you to agree with the section of the creed we looked at today? The Editors of Encyclopedia Britannica. “Apostles’ Creed.” Britannica.britannica.com/topic/Apostles-Creed. Accessed 11 Jan. 2023. Please read the following for next week: John 3:16; Luke 1:26-35 Some people accomplish a lot in life. In the scripture for today’s lesson, the Apostle Paul listed several of his accomplishments. He did not, however, place his confidence in what he did in the flesh. He valued his relationship with Jesus Christ more than all he accomplished before he accepted Jesus as his Lord and savior. There will be people that will try to minimize or discredit others based on how many accomplishments they have achieved. After we accept Jesus as our Lord and savior, we must value earthly accomplishments differently. We are called to serve just like Jesus served. The prize that God has will be for the faithful servants. We may receive some good things down here, but ultimately we should focus on receiving an everlasting prize from God when we get to heaven. How often do you think about your relationship with Jesus Christ? How many of your accomplishments in life would you consider less valuable than your relationship with Jesus Christ? How are you pressing toward the goal that the Apostle Paul talked about? Please read the following for next week: Genesis 1 and Isaiah 40 |
