Matthew 24:36-42 Today we will continue our study on the return of Jesus. In today’s scripture, it starts out with a fact we need to remember. No one knows the day or the hour Jesus will return for his church except God the Father. Jesus compares the days of Noah to how people will be living their lives when he returns. People will do their normal routines before Jesus returns just like people did their normal routines before Noah and his family entered the ark with the animals to escape the flood. Jesus is returning so that his church can escape the coming wrath of God. Jesus gives an important detail to his disciples in verses forty and forty-one. Some people will be left behind when Jesus gets his church. Two people will be next to each other and one will go to be with Jesus and the other will be left. We are given an instruction by Jesus in forty-two that goes along with what to do before his return. We are to watch. Watching is not the same as watching Netflix or your favorite sporting event. Next week we will look at scripture that describes how we watch for the return of Jesus. How are you living your day-to-day life right now? In what ways are you similar to Noah and his family before the flood? In what ways are you different than Noah and his family before the flood?

Acts 1:1-11 For the next few weeks, we will look at some scriptures that deal with the return of Jesus. His return is something that is possible only because he rose from the dead on that third day after he died. In our scripture for today, we read that Jesus told his disciples three things.
How much have you read about the return of Jesus? Have you received the Holy Spirit, so you have power to be a witness for Jesus? How have you been a witness for Jesus this week so far? For our study today, we are looking at scripture telling about the day Jesus entered Jerusalem before dying on the cross later in that week. All four of the gospels tell about this day, Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John. A crowd escorted Jesus into Jerusalem as he rode on a colt. They shouted praises as went along. Verse sixteen says the disciples did not understand at first what was done for Jesus on that day. They understood it after Jesus rose from the dead and was glorified. We need to show each other grace. We all will not understand things about our relationship with Jesus at the same time. Some people will have a closer relationship than others based on their experience with Jesus. Other people will get a closer relationship as the days go by and they experience more. A lot of people went to see Jesus just because they heard he performed a miracle. The Pharisees, however, could not stand how popular Jesus was. What is your relationship with Jesus like today? What are some things about Jesus that have taken some time for you to understand? When people see what we do from day to day, how do they respond? In the first scripture for today’s lesson, we see that many Jews placed their faith in Jesus after seeing what he did. The chief priests and Pharisees believed that if they did not stop Jesus, everyone would believe in him, and the Romans would take away their temple and nation. The things that Jesus did were pleasing to God the Father. He was obedient to God the Father. Yet there were people that were not happy with his actions. The second scripture for today’s lesson is part of a conversation Jesus had with his twelve disciples before sending them out. Jesus said, “If the head of the house has been called Beelzebub, how much more the members of his household!” We must be prepared and understand that believing in and following Jesus will not please some people. It will please God the Father and we have to decide if living a life pleasing to God the Father is more important than living a life pleasing to people. Some people will not like us when they learn that we love and obey and follow Jesus. Jesus said it is enough for a student to be like his teacher. Are we living like Jesus did? Do people respond to us and our actions by placing their faith in Jesus? How have you lived like Jesus this week? |
