The Apostle Paul explained some important facts about the universal church to the church in Corinth. He compared the universal church to a body and made the point that the universal church is the body of Christ. He wrote that we all are baptized by one Spirit into one body. Just like each part of the body has a specific function or ability, each person in the body of Christ has a specific function or ability. Not everyone is called to be an apostle, or prophet, or teacher, or miracle worker, or healer, or speaker and interpreter of different languages. Even so, Paul wrote, “there should be no division in the body, but that its parts should have equal concern for each other. If one part suffers, every part suffers with it; if one part is honored, every part rejoices with it.” How would you describe your function or ability in the church, the body of Christ? How often are you concerned about others in the body of Christ? How often do you rejoice when something good happens to someone in the body of Christ? The apostles had a simple message to share after Jesus left them and we have the same message to share today. “Repent and be baptized, every one of you, in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins.” Peter said that to the Jews in Jerusalem at Pentecost. After people repented, were baptized, and received the Holy Spirit they did some things that we may not do today. They devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching, to fellowship, to breaking bread, to prayer, they had things in common, they sold property and possessions to give to those in need, met in temple courts every day, ate together in their homes, and praised God. How often do we read what the apostles taught? How often do we fellowship and break bread with other believers in Jesus? How often do we sell what we have so others can have what they need? Please read the following for next week: 1 Corinthians 12:12-31 The Apostle Paul wrote to the church in Ephesus and reminded them of the first commandment that had a promise attached to it. If they honor their father and mother, they may enjoy long life on the earth. That commandment was originally given to the children of Israel by Moses. The Apostle Paul encouraged the children in the church to obey that commandment also. He also advised the fathers not to frustrate their children, but raise them in the training and instruction of the Lord. How many people honor their father and mother today? How many men are married to the mother of their children today? How many men are raising their children in the instruction of the Lord? Please read the following for next week: Acts 2:38-47 |
