This chapter finishes the book of Habakkuk. The verses in this chapter contain a prayer that Habakkuk prayed after receiving the answer from God in chapter two. Habakkuk heard about God and his fame. He also requested that God do what he has done in the past again and remember mercy in his wrath. Habakkuk knew God punished sin but asked for mercy. In verses three through fifteen, Habakkuk recalled some of God’s deeds. He closed the prayer with hope and declared that the Lord was his strength. We may not ever pray a prayer like this, but Habakkuk ended in a better place than the place he was in when he first questioned God. Prayer is a way for us to talk with God and get to a better place. Some situations, some challenges, or some consequences are only easy to go through after we talk with God about them. He is willing, able, and waiting for us to talk with him about what concerns we have. As the creator of all that has been made and will be made, he alone is the one that can give us what we need in times we have questions.
How has your prayer life with God been this month? Have you ever recounted God’s deeds, that you have heard about, during your prayer time with him? How do you feel after your prayer time?

The second chapter begins with Habakkuk waiting to receive an answer from God. In verses 4 through 20, God described what would happen to the Babylonians. There were consequences for how they treated people and there are consequences for how we treat people today. The same God that allowed nations to punish Babylon for its wickedness, punishes wicked nations today. There is a long list of nations that have done wicked things in the sight of God. Every one of those nations faced negative consequences for their wickedness. We as individuals do not have to behave wickedly just because we live in a nation that does. We all must choose how we will live and be prepared for the consequences that will come from our decisions.
Have you faced consequences from your past decisions this week? What are some consequences that have helped your relationship with God recently? Has God shown you how he is working in the world this week? Chapter 1 Verses 1-4
In these verses, Habakkuk asked God hard questions. We may have asked similar questions, but not to God. It takes faith to go to God with the hard questions that life causes us to have. The experiences Habakkuk had in Judah sounds like the experiences some of us have faced today. Every nation will face problems with violence, wickedness, and injustice. Chapter 1 Verses 5-11 God answered Habakkuk in these verses. God told Habakkuk he would use the Babylonians to bring about a change in Judah. God’s answer to Habakkuk’s questions was not what he expected or wanted to hear. If we ask God our hard questions, he will answer us. The answer may not be what we expect or want, but God will answer. Chapter 1 Verses 12-17 Habakkuk asked God more questions about why he would use the Babylonians. Habakkuk knew the reputation the Babylonians had and saw them as worse than the people living in Judah. God, however, knew what he was doing. God still knows what he is doing. He turns bad situations into a good thing for those who love him and are called by his name. When have you asked God hard questions? How did God answer your questions? How has God shown you his faithfulness recently? |
