Ephesians 4:32; 1 John 3:11-18 NIV Today we will cover two final scriptures to help us with the second goal of this study, which is, “grow in these qualities and they will keep you from being ineffective and unproductive in your knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ.” We will look at the last two qualities Peter mentioned in 2 Peter chapter 1:5-7. Brotherly kindness – Ephesians 4:32 Being kind does not go out of season. We must strive to show each other kindness, because we all need kindness from day to day. Some days we may need a kind word. Another day we may need someone to show us compassion. On another day we may need to be forgiven. Being kind to someone is not a sign we are weak. Being kind is a sign that we are a child of God. Love – 1 John 3:11-18 Love is something we show with our actions. Jesus loves us and he showed us his love by dying on the cross for our sins. Our actions must speak love if people are to recognize we are followers of Jesus. We are challenged by our nation and culture not to love like Jesus. We each have to decide whether we will love like Jesus or not. As we come to the end of this study, I pray you are maturing and growing up as a follower of Jesus Christ. All the promises we looked at in part one should remind us how we can have life and escape the corruption in this world. All the qualities we looked at in part two should help us be effective and productive followers of Jesus Christ. Which quality is a strength, brotherly kindness or love? Which quality needs some help, brotherly kindness or love? What would Jesus say about our brotherly kindness or love today? Please read the following for next week: Matthew 1

Luke 6:43-45; James 1:12; Ephesians 4:17-24 NIV Today we will cover a few more scriptures to help us with the second goal of this study, which is, “grow in these qualities and they will keep you from being ineffective and unproductive in your knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ.” We will look at three more qualities that Peter mentioned in 2 Peter chapter 1:5-7. Self-control – Luke 6:43-45 Our hearts are containers. We choose whether to put good things inside or evil things. Jesus said that whatever is inside our hearts will come out. Evil things and words come out when ours hearts are full of evil. Good things and words come out when our hearts are full of good. We must control what we consume and allow to be contained in our hearts. Perseverance – James 1:12 There is a reward for perseverance. God has promised those that love him and endure their test, they will receive the crown of life. Yes, life will be difficult. Yes, life will not be fair. Yes, life will not be predictable. However, enduring until the end will be worth all the hardships. Once we have received our reward from God, all the hardships will be minor in comparison. Godliness – Ephesians 4:17-24 We are called to be different than those who are living life separated from the life of God. Godliness means something. It means we live holy and righteous lives. We can live holy because of the Holy Spirit that lives inside us. We can live righteously because of Jesus. We renew our attitudes so that we are not seeking the old things that separated us from God. We do not give in to our old deceitful desires. We move forward living like God. Next week, Lord willing, we will finish looking at scriptures that helps us with our second goal. Which quality is a strength, self-control, perseverance, or godliness? Which quality needs some help, self-control, perseverance, or godliness? What would Jesus say about our self-control, perseverance, or godliness today? Please read the following for next week: Ephesians 4:32; 1 John 3:11-18 1 John 5:1-12; James 2:14-19; Ephesians 3:14-21 NIV Today we will cover a few scriptures to help us with the second goal of this study, which is, “grow in these qualities and they will keep you from being ineffective and unproductive in your knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ.” Today we will look at the first three qualities that Peter mentioned in 2 Peter chapter 1:5-7. Faith – 1 John 5:1-12 We have been taught to believe that Jesus is the son of God. That is the cornerstone of our faith. Our relationship with God is based on our relationship to his son. Whether we overcome this world or not is based on our belief that Jesus is the son of God. What we believe will impact how we live now in this world and our life after we leave this world. Goodness – James 2:14-19 Demons believe there is one God. However, their actions do not show that they love God or obey his commands. Our belief in Jesus has to be seen more than it is heard. People in our families and communities need to see what we believe even if they never hear us say what we believe. It is good to say and share what we believe, but our actions have to back them up. If our actions do not back up what we say we believe, then we are liars. And no one should believe what a liar tells them. Knowledge – Ephesians 3:14-21 There is knowledge that is common and then there is knowledge that is uncommon. When we profess our faith in Jesus, there is uncommon knowledge that we can be given. That uncommon knowledge is how great the love Jesus has for us is. This is the knowledge that can prevent a person from giving up on their life. This is the knowledge that can cause a person to live for God instead of for their own will. This is the knowledge that can cause a group of people to sacrifice their possessions so someone less fortunate can have something they need. The love Jesus has for us surpasses knowledge. Next week, Lord willing, we will continue looking at scripture that helps us with our second goal. Which quality is a strength, faith, goodness, or knowledge? Which quality needs some help, faith, goodness, or knowledge? What would Jesus say about our faith, goodness, or knowledge today? Please read the following for next week: Luke 6:43-45; James 1:12; Ephesians 4:17-24 John 14:15-27; 16:5-16 NIV The scriptures in John we look at in today’s lesson will be the last ones dealing with our first goal. As a reminder, our first goal in this study is, “through those promises we may participate in the divine nature and escape the corruption in the world caused by evil desires.” Here are a few things Jesus said about the Holy Spirit in our first scripture: 1. The Holy Spirit is a gift from the Father and Jesus 2. The Holy Spirit is a counselor 3. The world cannot accept the Holy Spirit 4. The world cannot see him 5. The world does not know him 6. The Holy Spirit lives inside us 7. The Holy Spirit will teach us 8. The Holy Spirit will remind us what Jesus said Our second scripture tells us more about the Holy Spirit. Jesus said this about the Holy Spirit: 1. The Holy Spirit will convict the world of guilt in regard to sin 2. The Holy Spirit will convict the world of guilt in regard to righteousness 3. The Holy Spirit will convict the world of guilt in regard to judgment 4. The Holy Spirit will guide us into all truth 5. The Holy Spirit will speak only what he hears 6. The Holy Spirit will tell us what is yet to come 7. The Holy Spirit will bring Jesus glory by taking from him and making it known to us Jesus told his disciples a lot about the Holy Spirit. We need to read and learn about the Holy Spirit that lives inside of us when we accept Jesus as our Lord and savior. The Holy Spirit plays a very important part in the lives of followers of Jesus. We must take time to pray and read scripture and allow time for the Holy Spirit to counsel and teach us. So many challenges we face are harder because we attempt to face them without the help of the Holy Spirit. We need the Holy Spirit, and we should live in such a way that we do not hinder the work the Holy Spirit is doing in our lives. Next week, Lord willing, we will start looking at scripture that will help us with the second goal. That second goal of this study is, “grow in these qualities and they will keep you from being ineffective and unproductive in your knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ.” How often do you allow the Holy Spirit to counsel you? How often do you spend time in prayer? What role does the Holy Spirit have in your life right now? Please read the following for next week: 1 John 5:1-12; James 2:14-19; Ephesians 3:14-21 |
